What is Tikkun Ha-Ir?
Tikkun Ha-Ir of Milwaukee (THI), Inc. provides volunteer, social action, and study opportunities for all Jews regardless of affiliation. The accepted translation of our Hebrew name is “repair of the city.” Activities integrate the study of Jewish texts with social action projects and programs that seek to improve the civic life of our community.
Tikkun Ha-Ir of Milwaukee provides a structure for all members of the Milwaukee Jewish community to volunteer and to study together. Volunteer opportunities include a wide range of community based projects from advocating for breakfast in Milwaukee Public Schools to assembling packages of Passover foods for those in need. Tikkun Ha-Ir also provides forums for Jews from all walks of life to come together to study Jewish texts that pertain to the social action and civic engagement – elements that form the core of our efforts to repair our city and our community.
Tikkun Ha-Ir of Milwaukee has become an integral part of the Jewish community’s response to poverty and hunger providing leadership and linkages between resources within the Jewish community and requested assistance and advocacy in the Milwaukee area.
Tikkun Ha-Ir of Milwaukee enjoys the sustaining support of sponsoring organizations who believe in the mission, but THI relies on the generous support of individuals who understand that their time and money help to foster essential social action programs. All members of our community are encouraged to participate in our learning sessions, volunteer for a social action project, and take leadership roles in Tikkun Ha-Ir activities. Membership in a sponsoring organization is not required. Events and activities are free and open to the public.
