Tikkun Ha-Ir
Tikkun Ha-Ir of Milwaukee, Inc. (THI) provides volunteer, social action, and study opportunities for all Jews regardless of affiliation. The accepted translation of our Hebrew name is “repair of the city.” Activities integrate the study of Jewish texts with social action projects and programs that seek to improve the civic life of our community.
“Speak up, judge righteously, champion the poor and the
needy." (Proverbs 31:9)
This season we donated over 6,000 pounds of organic produce to food banks, meal sites and hunger pantries. The Surplus Garden Harvest project is THI’s most successful collection to date in helping to reduce food insecurity in Milwaukee. Members of the community donated nutritious produce from home gardens, the Jewish Community Garden, Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) boxes from local farms & Congregation Sinai’s CSA share. Collection sites included Congregation Beth Israel and the Harry and Rose Samson JCC. Two organizations, TIPI CSA in Evansville (WI) and Outpost Natural Foods (Capitol Drive) were especially supportive.
The success of the Surplus Garden Harvest project is due to many selfless individuals including the Gan Ami pre-schoolers who worked in the Jewish Community garden. Other volunteers picked a pound or a few hundred pounds of produce, delivered donated produce, and also planted, weeded and harvested the Jewish Community Garden. Recipients of the Surplus Garden Harvest include the Jewish Community Pantry, The Hunger Task Force, Feeding America, Repairers of the Breach, Grand Avenue Club, and St. Benedict the Moor meal sites.
Unfortunately hunger does not disappear with the end of the harvest season, and we are committed to continue to supply nutritious food year-round to those in need. If you would like to make a difference, contact Pam Roza, THI Food Justice Coordinator, at proza@thi-milwaukee.org or 414-916-4568.
Passover Packing
About 550 people from the community came to the Jewish Home and Care Center on April 10 to pick up food for Passover, courtesy of the tremendous efforts of the Community Passover Food Drive (Maos Chitim). Volunteers, many of whom were teenagers from area religious schools, packed the donated food. This year the Passover packages included chickens, thanks to an anonymous donor, along with matzo, gefilte fish, horseradish, macaroons, and other staples for the Passover holiday. The Passover food distribution is a joint effort sponsored by the Tikkun Ha-Ir of Milwaukee along with Coalition for Jewish Learning, Jewish Family Services, the Jewish Home and Care Center, Harry & Rose Samson Family Jewish Community Center, Jewish Community Pantry, Rabbi Scheinfeld Maos Chitim Fund, and the Wisconsin Council of Rabbis.
